Superfoods on a budget - Grocery Shopping Hacks

Going to share help and tips on grocery hacks in the supermarket. Depending upon your financial situation, if you’d like to save money on grocery shopping and still eat healthy then..read on. Let me share the tips with you how to save money in the supermarkets and still go for healthy options.
Go to farmer’s market or the fresh food store. Ensure you pick the best quality food so they last long.

Tip #1
Have a grocery list ready for you which would have essential things you need for the week. One useful activity is to have a running list stuck with a magnet on the fridge with a pen next to it. Everytime something’s ran out, put an entry to the list if its essential. It’s a really good practice because without a list you’d miss some essentials whilst shopping or end up buying more than you would usually need. Keep a running list so you get those essentials that you need and not having to go back and forth.

Tip #2
Shop around. Go to 3 different stores, it won’t take more than 30 min to do so. Look for discounts offered on the food that you want to buy, some stores will offer that but not all. Best to check online a few different stores and look for food deals. Sometimes you’ll find these stores close to each other like in a big shopping area or a mall. You can even spread it across week. Like visiting market one day, aldi some other day.

Tip #3
Buy imperfect produce. I was looking for apples and a bag of apples cost $3.99 a kilo, just moved a ahead and could find apples with a slight imperfection at $1.99. Same apples, same brand and just as fresh as the previous one. Juts cop or peel off the imperfections. I am ok with imperfections but never for something that’s going off.

Tip #4
Become a label reader. Sometimes fruit and vegs are prices per unit and not per kilo. If its per unit, then you’d be going for biggest and the best one. But if its per kilos then of course pick up the one with the best quality. Also if you’re paying per kilo, you don’t want to pay for something you not gonna use. Example a cauliflower has so much extra that you’ll never eat. So try to take out extra stuff that you’ll not use.

Tip #5
Don’t be afraid to buy generic brands. Well..we come across the advertisements of these brands which these companies have paid a lot of money for. In my experience we can trust most of these brands. If there’s any doubt, don’t hesitate to turn the product and read the label. Read ingredients, expiry date etc. The other day I found a can of Italian chic peas and I just read the ingredients, which happened to be just chic peas in salt water, cost just 99 cents. Be savvy to read labels and make sure you’re comfortable with the ingredients. That’ll save you your health, time and money. Bear in mind same brand can have same good and not so good products.

Tip #6
Frozen food! There are certain circumstances where I’ll recommend buy frozen foods and in certain circumstances I won’t recommend it. For example, if not in season and you want to have an organic replacement, buy frozen fruits. Simply because they are not in season and buying them off season will be expensive. However things like bananas that are not available in all seasons, freeze your own.

Tip #7
Immediately freeze wilting fruit. I just bought straw berries and when I turned them I could see one or two are over ripe. I chop it down and put in the freezer and I can later use it in smoothies etc. That’s a great way to reduce food wastage and also save money. At the end of the day you’re paying for your food, right!!

Tip #8
Find the cheapest place for regular items. Keep note of the prices of the regular food items in various supermarkets. For example I am a regular buyer of almonds and pistachios and I find them much cheaper in Aldi than other supermarkets.

Tip #9
Be vary of buying in bulk. Bulk buy only if you need to. Don’t be carries away by 2 for 1 deals, take a step back and think – are you really going to use it before it’ll gets expired. This applies especially to food items that don’t have a very long shelf life and fridge life. Super markets will always use the marketing tactic to lure customers into spending more and avail discounted or free offer but be watchful and reflecting.

Tip #10
Don’r be a brand snob. Its not uncommon to stick to one brand, trust a brand and always buying products from that brand. No doubt the brand offeres you superior quality products but again this could cause you end up buying even the expensive products, whereas there could be similar products with a great quality and much cheaper to buy. Exapmple head and shoulder is a great shampoo. But Head strong is a similar altenative and just costs $2. Sometimes it actually comes out of the same factory with a different labelling. Same goes for milk, cheese, ice cream.

Tip #11
Choose products with a longer shelf life. Same products kept within the rack do have different expiry dates. Dig through, choose back options for those products that have longer shelf lives.

Hope these tips are helpful and informative. I have used these tips and saves around $40 on my weekly grocery shopping. If you do have time. I do suggest shopping around, go to 3 stores at least, do research.

Eat healthy and save money 😊

MORINGA
The new superfood that's trending amongst wellness types

The plant is a good source of vitamins C and A, and various minerals. Moringa was 2018's big new superfood, a “miracle tree” indigenous to the foothills of the Himalayas, but widely cultivated throughout India, south-east Asia and east Africa, too. Entirely edible, from root to bark, fast-growing and drought tolerant, with seeds that can purify dirty water, it’s such a valuable resource in many regions that the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has named it crop of the month. It is also, apparently, pretty good news for the rest of us: moringa has been touted by Time magazine as “the next quinoa”, while the Huffington Post reckons it’s “about to be huge, and you should know about it”. But some of the claims made for it – such as the assertion by “nutritionist and beauty expert” Kimberley Snyder that “it has twice the protein of spinach and three times as much iron” – should be treated with a degree of caution. A journal published by ...

MORINGA
Latest Health Superfood or Just a Fad?

Moringa plants, originally grown in Southeast Asia, are one of those amazing plants where every bit of them is useful; the leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds are edible, and the stem has medicinal purposes. It’s one of those trees that everyone should grow in a backyard or windowsill, because beyond its many uses, the tree grows quickly and is really hardy, not needing much water or any fertilizer. Moringa is most commonly and easily consumed as a powder made from leaves from the Moringa oleifera tree. If you’re looking to purchase the powder, be sure to get pure, ground dried leaves, rather than a supplement that mixes in other things. This powder can then be added to cooking, or used for tea or in shakes. However, as with other supplements , we don’t recommend consuming moringa just for the sake of it, but rather for the specific benefits and needs outlined below. NINE HEALTH BENEFITS AND USES OF MORINGA 1. Nutrition and antioxidants galore Moringa leaves contain p...
